Try something new this holiday season and create your own decorations! Homemade decorations are a fun and unique way to decorate your home while making sure you stay on a budget!

Homemade wreaths are common for those trying to save money. If available, reuse bows from the previous season. If you don’t have any old bows, you can easily make new ones out of ribbon, cloth, or paper. Gather pinecones from outside and use gold or silver spray paint to give them some color. Apply white paint on the tips of the cone for a snow effect! After they have dried, take a florist wire, about one foot long, wrap and twist it tightly around the cone and then attach it to the wreath.

For a natural holiday look, use fruit and flowers. Fill a bowl with fresh lemons, limes or oranges for the centerpiece. For more color, use cranberries. Also, cranberries can be used as fun garland after they are strung together!

Pomander balls are unique because they look nice and smell nice too! A pomander ball is a piece of fruit, usually an orange that has been pierced with cloves and dried to give a wonderful aroma throughout your house! Simply tie a ribbon around an orange and create a beautiful bow. Use a piercing tool to poke holes through the skin of the orange. Be sure to keep the holes spread apart. Insert the cloves into the holes. Remember, the orange will shrink as it dries so you do not need to put them so close together. The orange will dry out over the next week and shrink, but you will be left with a wonderful scent for the holidays! You can hang them from your mantle or tree or arrange them in a decorative bowl!

Translating the home…

December 10, 2010

I love to bring all the warmth and style I use in my residential projects to the healthcare industry. These traditionally stark and unfriendly spaces are the ones that need it the most in order to promote a healing and therapeutic atmosphere.

Below is a little photo montage – all taken by architectural photographer Peter Rymwid – of my healthcare projects.

I hope everyone is in the thick of holiday planning and putting all my decorating tips from previous posts to good use!

In my last blog, you learned all about how to decorate your home for that special holiday party. Here’s a few more tips on how to make beautiful centerpieces for your table that are sure to impress all of your guests and family!

Candles are a great element to any centerpiece. Purchase different sized candleholders to make them stand out at different heights. Add damp floral foam inside a couple of bowls and creatively arrange greenery and garland on top. Lastly, place all of them in a wooden toolbox to create a rustic centerpiece that is sure to stand out!

If you like the candlestick idea, yet want to try something more elegant- purchase glass candlesticks. Instead of candles, surprise guests by adding oversized ornaments on top.

Glass bowls are another option for your holiday centerpiece. Set a clear bowl in the center of the table and place solid colored ornaments inside. Chose one color for a more uniformed look or a variety of colors to draw attention! Either look is sure to add a unique touch to your table setting. For something extra, place tinsel or pine needles at the bottom of the bowl.

For those seeking a traditional centerpiece, try adding fresh or artificial fruit to the center of your table. Emphasize this look by adding a table runner. Make the fruit sparkle on top by coating each piece with glue and sprinkling glitter all around it.

Whichever look you decide to chose for your holiday party this year, you are sure to impress your guests! For further tips and decorating ideas visit Meryl Stern’s website.

Tired of spending so much money on decorations? Well this year, decorating for the holiday season doesn’t have to be costly. Here are a few tips on how to decorate on a tight budget.

It is easy to get inspired this winter season with a simple walk outside. Various sized twigs, pine cones, leaves, etc. will help your wreath come to life. Proudly display them on your doors, windows, or fireplace.

Instead of purchasing your holiday centerpiece this year, try making your own Glass ornaments; they are cheap and make a great centerpiece when placed and arranged nicely in a bowl. Another centerpiece option is filling decorative bowls with pine cones. Simply spray paint the pine cones gold, silver, red or green and arranging them in a bowl will make a unique seasonal focal point.

Tin cans shouldn’t be thrown away! Instead, remove the label, wash/dry and carefully remove the lid. Next, fill with water and freeze over night. The next day, take a nail and hammer and create tiny holes into a design of your choice. Add a candle and your creation will light up!

This holiday season many people get into the celebrating spirit and host entertaining parties in their home. Decorating your living space can be fun and simple and a sure way to bring seasonal cheer to your home this holiday season!

Adding a scenic village or gingerbread house to the center of your table can start off your holiday-inspired decor. This focal point can also include faux snow and miniature trees.

Candlelight is a wonderful element to any room. Yet, it can be dangerous if small children or pets are in the area. Substituting battery-powered pillar candles will still provide that holiday glow without the fuss.

Add a special element to that chandelier. Beautifully draped garland with ribbons and holiday accessories will be a surprising bonus to your holiday decor.

Flowers always brighten up a room. Mixing fresh flowers into your garland and greenery will add a wonderful scent to your home while also giving it bursts of red hidden between all the greens.

Lights are always a great feature to incorporate with your holiday decor. Incorporating twinkling mini lights to a wreath, draped garland or Christmas tree will guarantee to draw some attention from your guests.

Be sure to add ornaments, assorted candies and glittered wreaths around your home for those extra finishing touches and you will be sure to have a home that is all ready to entertain this holiday season!
